Volunteer Crew
How to Apply The Trust sails 24 ten-day Youth Development Voyages per year throughout New Zealand. In between our ten day voyages there are many one-day sailings along with several five-day sails. The Trust employs permanent crew, which consist of Master, Mates, Engineer and Cook for each ten-day voyage. In addition to these permanent crew there are three volunteers per voyage, they fill the position such as Watch Assistants.
The Watch Assistant supports a group of participants (age is usually 15 -19 years on ten-day voyage).The role is that of mentor and guide, helping them to come to grips with sailing the ship, be a role model in standards of behavour, showing leadership skills, assisting with the building of the team.
To be a volunteer crew member you need to:
- ideally aged between 20 - 60 years of age
- enjoy working with young people
- Preferably have some experience in a teaching or coaching role
- have a positive attitude and friendly manner
- have heaps of enthusiasm.
Previous sailing experience while useful is not essential.
As well as Watch Assistants the Trust has a need for relieving crew positions. The relieving crew are people who hold sea going licences for positions as Mate or Engineer and fill in for when permanent staff take annual leave or are sick. If you have an ILM (Inshore Launch Master) qualification or a NZOM (NZ offshore Masters Certificate) , (Engineer Class 5) or equalivant. and are able to give 10-days of your time per year, we would like to hear from you.
