Privacy Act and Medical Information
The information collected by the Trust in this booking is used for the purposes of assessing your suitability for the nominated voyage, and for the use of the Trust in organising and administering the operation of the Trust’s vessel Spirit of New Zealand. The information will also be used to send you further information about the voyage, and the Trust’s activities. Please note that the information provided on the medical form is treated in the strictness of confidence.
Voyage Safety
The Spirit of Adventure Trust uses its best endeavours to ensure that any voyage is safe for all those involved. Participation in a voyage, however, will involve both physical effort on the part of the participant and exposure to greater than usual risk. The Trust attempts to minimise these risks by being a responsible and professional organisation with high standards of safety and discipline when on a voyage. For this reason, participants must agree to abide by the safety and other instructions given to them and be able to meet the minimum fitness and health requirements set out by the Trust. During your voyage, you will learn much about safety afloat. There are statutory safety units given on board about Fire, Abandon Ship and Man Overboard amongst others. However, some immediate tips for you are:
- sitting on the life rafts damages the white fibreglass casing and seals. This will let rainwater into the raft and may rot, rust or otherwise prevent the raft from operating properly. Please sit elsewhere around the vessel.
- the wooden guardrail top around the vessel appears a very comfortable and convenient place to sit. However, unexpected or sudden movement of the ship can cause you to overbalance and fall overboard. Please find somewhere else to sit around the vessel.
- the rigging is a place of work in a sailing vessel and you will have ample opportunity to explore this domain. However, do not climb the rigging unless wearing a safety harness, accompanied by a crew member and after a safety briefing from a senior crew member.
- red night lights are left on at all times for night vision.
- moving around the ship can be a hazard you are not used to it. Move purposefully and carefully on the stairs. Do not swing on the doors and overhead ledges as most accidents happen thereby carelessness.
- watch your head - the ceilings are different in your home or school. Be aware of the engine room door, as it can be opened from inside without warning.
- doors should be opened and closed or held ajar in your hand to prevent accidents
By agreeing to these terms and conditions you and your parent(s)/guardians agree:
- to accept the risks inherent with any voyage
- to comply with the safety standards and directions given to you while on board
- that the Trust, its servants and agents (whether negligent or not) shall not be responsible for any injury, accident, loss, damage or expense suffered by you on a voyage
