Captain's Log Day 2

Log: 7/4

Voyage 891 has began! The trainees joined yesterday and we departed for Motuihe Island where we anchored for the night. The first morning swim was pleasant with the water temperature a comfortable 19 degrees! Today is a big learning day, becoming a community, climbing the rigging, learning the ropes and setting their first sails. Fun times!

Captain's Log Day 4

Log: 10/4

Our voyage has taken us to some beautiful anchorages, off Waiheke Island, Colville Bay on the Coromandel peninsular and now up in the stunning Port Abercrombie at Great Barrier Island. The trainees are getting some good sea miles under their belt and an understanding of sailing a Tall Ship. Today they have challenged themselves by going out sailing the luggers (small sailing boats) and climbing to the very top of the mast then a well deserved fun time swimming and jumping off the bowsprit.

Captain's Log Day 6

Log: 11/4

Great Barrier Island is a stunning place to visit and has some beautiful walks. The trainees headed ashore yesterday and visited Glenfern Sanctuary where they learnt about pest control, then walked up to a viewing platform in a Kauri tree. Next they walked to a beautiful waterfall and had a quick dip. Today we are saying farewell to Great Barrier, stowing the ship for sea, reefing the sails and sailing off past Little Barrier and onto Kawau Island.

Captain's Log Weather Update

We are safely at anchor in Bostequet Bay, it is calm and quite sheltered. This afternoon we will head over to Mahurangi harbour for the night as the wind is easing and going westerly.

Captain's Log - Day 8

After an adventurous sail from Great Barrier Island on Thursday we have spent two lovely days around the Kawau Island and Mahurangi area. We have been practicing tacking the ship, learning navigation and now the young people are taking over the ship! Trainee Day has begun with the trainees voting in a new crew for all the roles on the ship. They have the ship for the next 24 hours.
