Captain's Log Day 2

Log: 14/12

We are approaching the end of our first 24 hours on board, and we are all learning how to live together in a tight space. We have learnt how to clean the ship and speak “sailor”.
After the 6:30 a.m. swim, we have learnt how to put the harnesses on and climb the mast safely. This afternoon, we head to sea and put the sails up, sailing properly for the first time. Tonight, we hope to be blown towards the bottom end of Waiheke Island and anchored safely in Man o' War bay.

Captain's Log Day 3

Log: 16/12

We are used to ship life now. Daily routines are settling in. And the 0630 swim is not that bad. The water temp is over 20 degrees. Today we had an adventure ashore and then a swim shortly it will be lunch and then we are sailing into the sunset. (Or somewhere in that direction). More adventures to come.

Captain's Log Day 4

Log: 17/12

It’s raining. Well. Sort of drizzle. But this means we get to try out the wet weather gear. It’s great to be onboard a ship with all the necessary gear and equipment. Standing in the rain for “colours” is an experience not to be missed.
We had Beach activities this morning and inside navigation exercises are planned for this afternoon.
If the wind picks up we might even get a sail.
All is well on board and the food is amazing.
We even had dessert with lunch 🍰

Captain's Log Day 5

Log: 18/12

What a day = the forecast was for wind, woohoo! So we went sailing.
Just entered Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island. Everyone took in the amazing scenery that surrounded us and ended the day with a swim to cool down. Life couldn't be better.

Captain's Log Day 6

Log: 19/12

Everyone went on a hike on Great Barrier Island. Walking up Mt Heale to be exact and taking in the incredible views after our hike. We'll make our way back to the ship from our walk where I’m sure an afternoon swim is on the agenda.

Captain's Log Day 7

Log: 19/12

Well, it’s a lovely day out here - sunny and hot. We are sailing the small boats around Port Fitzroy and climbing up the front mast all the way to the very top. It’s scary up there, but the crew is looking after us. We have been promised a swim at lunchtime and dinner shore around an unlit bin fire (Fire ban rules). We will have to imagine the fire and eat our marshmallows cold.

Captain's Log Day 8

Log: 21/12

Our ten-day trip is fast coming to an end.
Trainee day starts tomorrow and we are getting ready for it. By now we can navigate, set and strike the sails, steer, cook, clean and be general all round seafarers. Today’s epic adventure was to sail the ship from Great Barrier Island to Kawau Island where we are anchoring for the night. We have mixed feelings about seeing the lights of Auckland as it is exciting to go home but sad to say goodbye to so many wonderful people. More adventures tomorrow.
