Every year, the New Zealand Student Trustee Association offers voyages on board Spirit of New Zealand for student representatives elected to their school’s Board of Trustees. Voyages are usually held in the summer break prepare students for the year ahead as a School Student Trustee. The emphasis of the programme is to gain knowledge in all aspects of committee and board work, to develop a network and increase self-confidence and resilience.
An invoice will be sent to New Zealand Student Trustee Association for payment.
We strongly suggest that if bringing a camera on board, you equip yourself with a dry bag for the safe keeping of your camera – please remember you are within a wet environment. Please bring your camera charger with batteries.
Please don't bring it with you. We have an ample supply of various sea sickness medication in the unlikely event that you need it. For safety reasons, we record and administer it, so we know who has taken it and can monitor you.
Fishing gear and dive equipment is not permitted on board.
On each voyage we aim to have 40 students from different schools from all over New Zealand to get the complete experience.
If you attend secondary school we need confirmation from either the Spirit Coordinator or your year Dean that they are aware you will be out of school during that time. More info ->
Every voyage is different and it will often depend on weather. We have a live ship tracker on the home page of our website, so make sure you tell your friends and family to keep an eye on where you are!
Most of our voyages are unisex. All activities are done as a team, but we do have separate living areas and bathrooms for male and female paticipants (20 on each side of the ship). More info ->
The ship operates around the New Zealand coast throughout the year and may sometimes be away from immediate medical support (the ship's crew are fully trained in marine first aid). The voyages can at times be mentally and physically demanding with acitivities including sailing, swimming and hiking. We have specific 'Medically Fit' criteria for each voyage type which you will find when you start your booking. If you have any concerns or questions, please get in touch with us to discuss.
For each voyage type, there are some medical and general criteria that you will need to meet. These vary depending on the voyage type that you will find on the specific voyage page on our website. If you have any queries around this, we encourage you to give us a call to discuss. Visit one of our voyages to find out more ->
We have certain medical criteria that you will need to meet if you would like to take part in a voyage. Check out the medical criteria in the type of voyage you'd like to participate in, and if you have any more questions, please give us a call in the office. More info ->
Yes you can! As long as you meet the criteria, you can take part in a 10 Day voyage.
You heard right :-) We do take all mobile and electronic devices off participants on our 10 Day and 5 Day voyages. This is so you can fully engage in the programme, plus you will be way too busy anyway (switch off - to switch on!).The ship is in daily contact with the Spirit office, so if an urgent message needs to be sent through, we can easily make that happen. And your friends and family can follow the ship here, so they know where you are!
We typically sail during the day and anchor up later in the afternoon. Although on some voyages that are going from one port to another, there may be the odd night sail.
