Young sailors had trip of their lives

Ten year 10 pupils from East Otago High School have returned from sailing on Spirit of Adventure. "This is the second such trip in four years undertaken by students at East Otago High School," principal Lennox Sharp said. "This year's trip consisted of four different schools from throughout New Zealand and was a five-day voyage around the Hauraki Gulf that left from Auckland." The other schools were Hamilton Boys' High School, Tauranga Girls' College and Auckland's Elim Christian School. "Many of the team had not been to Auckland before, so going to New Zealand's largest city was an experience in itself," Mr Sharp said. "The group had an amazing five days aboard Spirit of Adventure. Days started at 6.30am with a fitness warm-up routine, followed by a swim in the ocean and cleaning the ship. "All the schools were actively involved in the sailing of the Spirit of Adventure, including the night watch, plus there were competitive games and activities held throughout the five days." The pupils said it was the best experience of their lives, Mr Sharp said. "It developed their teamwork and leadership skills in a setting none of them were used to. The students found being put 'out of their comfort zone' an incredibly worthwhile experience and challenge. "The team undertook a variety of fundraising ventures to reduce the cost of the trip and they are indebted to the sponsorship provided from the East Otago community."
