and we're off ... heading for Motu Ihe for the night
Log: 25/9
The rain cleared yesterday morning and we enjoyed a pleasant trip to anchor off Eastern Beach. This morning all trainees had a swim and are now climbing aloft and learning, before we set our course north after lunch with the promise of good winds.

Yesterday we sailed north after lunch in fresh westerly winds, reaching speeds of up to 9 knots. A few trainees felt the effects of the sea which built to around 1 metre at times. Nearing Kawau, while dropping sails, the trainees rose to the challenge of a sudden 35-knot squall and very heavy rain. It was an exciting start to the voyage, and all were looking forward to roast beef for dinner.

After beach games in the sun at Martin's Bay, we sailed inside Kawau Island before continuing on to Great Barrier Island in moderate breezes, arriving as the sun set. We are now anchored in Fitzroy Harbour, where glassy calm waters lie beneath a starry sky.

We explored a river on Great Barrier Island yesterday, paddling the rafts as far upstream as we could under the sun. After lunch, we sailed off the anchor and spent the afternoon gybing and tacking back and forth along Fitzroy Harbour. The trainees are really starting to get to grips with the sails and lines (ropes) and are enjoying sailing the Ship. Daylight Savings means a very early morning swim!

After an early wake-up with daylight saving, we paddled ashore at Kiwiriki Bay and set off on a bush hike. The track took us up and down through the forest and then along the gravel road for 5 hours, all the way to Port Fitzroy. The winds stayed very light throughout the day, with the sun a welcome companion. Last night, everyone gathered ashore at Smokehouse Bay for dinner by the campfire.

Another sunny day, spent at anchor in Te Kouma Harbour at Coromandel. All climbed to the very top of the foremast and became more familiar with working aloft. Although the wind has been light, there was enough to sail the small luggers. A fun break after lunch when most enjoyed the yard swing, swimming and the slide overboard from the top of the cabin.

Today, drones flew by to snap some awesome shots of the ship doing its thing out on the water. Meanwhile, it was election day onboard, when the students become the masters (literally!). Our newly elected crew is now ready to seas the day tomorrow as they take charge at sea!
