A 10 Day Voyage on board Spirit of New Zealand is a life-changing experience – unlocking your potential, leaving you ready to face your future!
You’ll be one of over a thousand young Kiwis each year who get on board to experience the trip of a life time.You’ll leave with a whole new set of skills, lots of new friends and a new confidence to take on the challenges in life.The whole voyage is based on learning by doing. You’ll face all sorts of challenges and take part in lots of activities on the ship, on the water and on the shore.Leaving you with a level of self-empowerment only found on the Spirit of New Zealand.
Increased confidence and skills: On Spirit you’ll improve your communication and leadership skills and learn the importance of self-awareness and being a part of a team. As you face the various challenges your confidence will increase as you increasingly move outside of your comfort zone.
New friends and connections: You’ll meet 39 other young kiwis from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. Over 10 days you will come to depend on each other, learn tolerance and acceptance and create close and lasting bonds.Once you leave the ship you are connected to the Spirit community for life! You’ll have the opportunity to return as a crew member and share your experiences with others.

The ship operates around the New Zealand coast throughout the year and may sometimes be away from immediate medical support (the ship’s crew are fully trained in marine first aid). The 10 Day programme can at times be mentally and physically demanding with activities including sailing, swimming and hiking.

Your Voyage should be a wonderful and memorable experience.To ensure safety and harmony for all on board we require the following standard of behaviour to be observed. You accept that Spirit of Adventure Trust reserves the right to remove you from the Ship should any of the below not be complied with. Note: as a result, any costs you incur will not be covered.
Travel to and from the Ship
Travel to and from the Ship is the participant’s responsibility and cost (unless detailed otherwise on your Voyage paperwork) and you may be asked to forward your travel details to validate your arrival time. It is critical you make note of your joining and departure times as your late arrival could risk the Ship’s departure time. You need sufficient time before and after the Voyage to reach your travel point; e.g. if flying, we advise your flight arrives at least 3 hours before the Ship departs and when you leave, you book your flight no sooner than 3 hours after the Ship returns to allow sufficient time to travel to the Airport.
Photo / Video Consent
During your Voyage, photographic images and video footage may be taken of any of the activities or participants. Spirit of Adventure Trust, and their official partners, may use these by way of publication in print, online and general media and your consent is given. Please note this does not include general photos taken by other participants or the official group voyage photo (where applicable). If you are a participant under 16 years, we also require your parent(s)/guardian(s) permission.
Health, Fitness & Age and Medical Information
All participants must be in good health and must complete our confidential medical questionnaire. All medical issues and medications taken must be declared on the form and your chosen medical practitioner must confirm the information is correct by signing your medical form. All information is treated with total confidentiality. Please note that the Trust reserve the right to refuse a booking on the grounds of your medical information and a full refund will be provided. If you fail to declare a medical condition or medication that then results in you being refused boarding or being off-loaded from the Ship, the Trust will then determine what, if any, refund is provided. All participants must declare if they have been in contact with an infectious disease. Where required and if needed for medical advice on the participant, all participants give permission for Spirit of Adventure Trust to contact the GP/medical specialist who signed the participants’ medical forms,
The information we collect on your application, medical and other official forms is used to assess your suitability for the voyage and for organising and administering the operation of the Ship. The information is also used to send you further information about your voyage, any future Trust activities, and provide selected information back to our Scholarship Funders as requested by them (i.e. Ministry of Youth). Please note, all your information is treated in the strictness of confidence and held with the utmost care; we value your privacy and never give lease, sell or otherwise disclose your personal information except as above, required by law or in the case of an emergency where you may need medical treatment.
Personal Items and Insurance
The Spirit of Adventure Trust cannot be held responsible for any damage to property or belongings taken aboard the vessel and we strongly advise you arrange your own insurance for these items. You may wish to label your belongings/clothing.
Alcohol and Smoking Policy
Spirit of Adventure Trust operates a smoke-free and alcohol-free environment. No smoking (including e-cigarettes and vaping) or drinking is permitted in our office or on the Ship throughout the entire voyage (anywhere on the Ship).
Participation will involve physical effort and exposure to greater than usual risk. The Trust attempts to minimise all risks by being a responsible and professional organisation with high standards of safety and discipline. Participants must agree to abide by all instructions given to them by the Spirit Crew. There are statutory safety briefs given on board about Fire, Abandon Ship and Man Overboard amongst others. Payment of Fees
Spirit of Adventure Trust has the right to cancel, advance, postpone or substitute any scheduled sailing at any time – hence our recommendation to take out travel insurance.
Refunds/Cancellations/Bookings - applies to all individuals on Trophy Voyages
As noted on your application/booking form, which you have signed, you and/or your parents or guardians agree to these terms and conditions and acknowledge you have read them. You are also agreeing:
A $200 deposit is required with your booking and the remainder is due three months before your voyage departure date.
We understand that for many participants, finding the money required for a 10-day voyage may be your first challenge. Previous participants have taken on part-time jobs, asked friends and family for help or spoken to local organisations to financially support them. We’re here to help you, so once you're confirmed on a voyage, we will give you the support you need to fundraise. Remember - the earlier you book your voyage, the more time you have to fundraise!
Because it's important to us to us to enable all young New Zealanders to enjoy a 10 Day voyage, the Trust has financial scholarships available for those who meet the criteria. When you select a voyage and complete your booking, you will be given an option to apply for a financial scholarship. If you think you can fundraise yourself then please leave this section blank, but if you require some help with your voyage fee, you will be asked some questions to determine your eligibility.
Please remember that the more information you provide to us, the more likely you are to receive a financial scholarship.

Residential: All Spirit of Adventure voyages of more than 5 days duration can be counted for the Gold Residential requirements on the understanding that each Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Aotearoa New Zealand | Hillary Award participant does not know more than one other person on their watch (this restriction does not apply to Adventurous Journeys).
Adventurous Journeys: 10 Day journeys can be counted towards the Adventurous Journey section of the Gold level under the following circumstances - note that using the voyage for the Residential as well will affect which parts of the Adventurous Journey can be counted.
We strongly suggest that if bringing a camera on board, you equip yourself with a dry bag for the safe keeping of your camera – please remember you are within a wet environment. Please bring your camera charger with batteries.

Once you are confirmed on a voyage, you will receive an invoice for the full fee less your deposit paid to the email address you have supplied in your booking.
Your invoice is due to be paid in full, three months prior to your voyage.
Yes you can pay off your invoice as you go, as long as it is paid in full, three months before your voyage.
There is a lot of preparation involved with every sailing, so we need to close off voyages three months out.
If there is a reason you are unable to pay your invoice off in full, three months before your sailing, please contact us so we can come to an arrangement for it to be paid. If you haven't paid or contacted us, then we may need to remove you from your voyage.
Just let us know in your booking form who the organisation/person is, their contact details and the amount they are paying and we will email them with an invoice. Please make sure you have permission from them first.

You will need to complete the financial scholarship application in the booking form on the 10 Day Development Voyage and send in the relevant supporting documentation to us via email. When you select a voyage and complete your booking, you will be given an option to apply for a financial scholarship.

Please don't bring it with you. We have an ample supply of various sea sickness medication in the unlikely event that you need it. For safety reasons, we record and administer it, so we know who has taken it and can monitor you.
No you don’t need to be nominated. You can book directly with us.
Fishing gear and dive equipment is not permitted on board.
On each voyage we aim to have 40 students from different schools from all over New Zealand to get the complete experience.

If you attend secondary school we need confirmation from either the Spirit Coordinator or your year Dean that they are aware you will be out of school during that time. More info ->
On joining the ship, you must have had your 16th birthday and not had your 19th birthday.
Every voyage is different and it will often depend on weather. We have a live ship tracker on the home page of our website, so make sure you tell your friends and family to keep an eye on where you are!
Most of our voyages are unisex. All activities are done as a team, but we do have separate living areas and bathrooms for male and female paticipants (20 on each side of the ship). More info ->

Of course you can come back! But it will need to be as a crew member. If you're aged between 17-20yrs, you can apply to be a Leading Hand
Yes you can! As long as you meet the criteria, you can take part in a 10 Day voyage.
Due to the type of voyage, you must be aged 18 years and over on joining the ship to take part in an adult coast voyage. If you're under this age, you should sign up for our 10-day development voyage.

You heard right :-) We do take all mobile and electronic devices off participants on our 10 Day and 5 Day voyages. This is so you can fully engage in the programme, plus you will be way too busy anyway (switch off - to switch on!).The ship is in daily contact with the Spirit office, so if an urgent message needs to be sent through, we can easily make that happen. And your friends and family can follow the ship here, so they know where you are!

We typically sail during the day and anchor up later in the afternoon. Although on some voyages that are going from one port to another, there may be the odd night sail.
